Away to Remember

A trip to Remember wth the Imperial War Museum

The armistice had been signed…the war was over and someday soon we were to go home, go home in one piece, unlike some of our mates…’

Lance Corporal Eric Hames, IWM Documents

Our Away To Remember students travelled from across the UK to the battlefields of the First World War for a trip of a lifetime, 7-12 November. Leave comments and messages of remembrance, ask questions, watch videos and read their blogs recorded live from sites and services across France and Belgium. What has the First World War got to do with you?

At the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month of 1918, the fighting that had involved every continent around the world stopped.  Germany and the Allies had agreed an Armistice.  The First World War had lasted four years, 4 months and 14 days.

To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Armistice, the Imperial War Museum worked in association with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to provide 26 young people from across the UK with the trip of a lifetime. Our Away To Remember reporters travelled on an all expenses paid visit to France and Belgium for Remembrance Day, from 7-12 November 2008.

To win a place on this once in a lifetime experience our prize winners answered two questions:

What impact the First World War had on their community...
What they think about Remembrance today and in the future...
