The Lidice Memorial

This memorial was completed in 2000 and is of the children of Lidice.
While the men were gathered at Horák’s farm, women and children were removed to the schoolhouse and from there to Kladno, a town nearby. Three days after the massacre, the women of Lidice were sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp in Germany, where 53 of them died. Most of the children were disappeared, probably gassed in the Chelmno death camp. A few who were considered of ‘Aryan’ stock were sent to Germany for a ‘proper upbringing’. In all, 340 Lidice citizens were murdered. 143 women from Lidice returned home after the war ended, and after a two-year search, 17 children were restored to their mothers.
